| · I live on a 25 MPH residential street that has a serious problem with speeding and drag racing. How can I petition to have speed bumps, or other form of speed control, added to my street?
The topic of speed control on residential streets comes up frequently. Municipalities are under state mandate to follow standards set forth in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Any signage, any street marking, or any traffic calming measures considered by City Councils should abide by the MUTCD. "Speed Bump" on public roads do not conform to the MUTCD. Farmington City's standard approach for responding to speed complaints are as follow:
The Police Department is asked to park the City's speed trailer along the given street without turning on the high-lighted speed indicator to obtain unbiased results on what the average speed is on the street.
If the average speed matches the speed limit on the street nothing else is done. If the average speed far exceeds the marked speed limit, the City solicits help from the City's traffic engineers for ideas in reducing speed. Some of those idea is stepped up enforcements and more frequent use of the speed trailer with the speed indicator operational. Generally when the speed results are complete, the average traffic speed is very close to the speed limit.
Any person wanting to report excessive speeds are requested to call the Farmington City Police Department @ 451-5453. Back to top
