Answer
·  I live on a 25 MPH residential street that has a serious problem with speeding and drag racing. How can I petition to have speed bumps, or other form of speed control, added to my street?

The topic of speed control on residential streets comes up frequently. Municipalities are under state mandate to follow standards set forth in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Any signage, any street marking, or any traffic calming measures considered by City Councils should abide by the MUTCD. "Speed Bump" on public roads do not conform to the MUTCD. Farmington City's standard approach for responding to speed complaints are as follow:

The Police Department is asked to park the City's speed trailer along the given street without turning on the high-lighted speed indicator to obtain unbiased results on what the average speed is on the street.

If the average speed matches the speed limit on the street nothing else is done. If the average speed far exceeds the marked speed limit, the City solicits help from the City's traffic engineers for ideas in reducing speed. Some of those idea is stepped up enforcements and more frequent use of the speed trailer with the speed indicator operational. Generally when the speed results are complete, the average traffic speed is very close to the speed limit.

Any person wanting to report excessive speeds are requested to call the Farmington City Police Department @ 451-5453.

·  Can I leave my car parked on the street year round?

No, City ordinance states that from November 15 to the last day of February no vehicles of any kind may be parked in the street right-of-way from 1 am to 7 am. Tickets will be issued to those who are not in compliance. Park all vehicles, trailers, and boats off of streets, until the snow is removed. Ridges of snow around vehicles parked on streets will freeze and prevent or slow down future snow removal and may cause accidents when any vehicle hits them.

·  I heard there was a place that I could take my used oil?

Farmington City Public Works (720 W. 100 N.) is a participant in Utah's used oil recycling program. Oil can be dropped off Monday - Friday 8:30am - 11:30am and 12:30pm - 3:30pm. Oil must not be contaminated by brake fluid, antifreeze or chlorinated products. Please check in at the Public Works Office and you will be admitted to the used oil site.

·  How do I purchase an additional garbage can?

In order to obtain a second container, a “Request of Extra Garbage Container” must be signed by the resident. This can be done either at City Hall or the Public Works Building. There is a $8.00 charge per month for the second container and it must be kept for a minimum of six months. The additional charge will be added to your monthly utility bill.
